In October 2022, the BCCI expressed its plans to organize a five-team women’s franchise cricket tournament scheduled for March 2023. The event, officially named the Women’s Premier League in January 2023, involved investors obtaining franchise rights through a closed bidding process in the same month. Diageo, the proprietors of Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League, secured rights to one of the franchises.

In February 2023, Ben Sawyer was named as the head coach of the team. The inaugural player auction for the WPL took place on 13th February 2023, with Royal Challengers Bangalore recruiting 18 players for their squad. On 18th February 2023, Smriti Mandhana was announced as the team’s captain. The team secured a fourth-place finish in the group stage during the inaugural tournament.
