It tournament was unofficially titled as Women’s Indian Premier League, on 25 January 2023 BCCI named it as Women’s Premier League.
WPL 2023 Player Auction
The inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League Player Auction saw a total of 87 players sold and INR 59,50,00,000 collected across the five franchises. The auction saw a balance of experience and balance that rewarded domestic talent with globally popular foreign stars. The first-ever bid in the history of the WPL Player Auction became the most expensive in the 2023 edition as Royal Challengers Bangalore fired Smriti Mandana for INR 3.40 crore.
On the other hand, Indian cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur joined Mumbai Indians for INR 1.80 crore. All-rounders Brahmi Sharma and Jemima Rodrigues raked in huge profits after buying the Delhi Capitals for INR 2.60 crore and INR 2.20 crore respectively. Among foreign players, Australia’s Ashley Gardner and England’s Natalie Sciver topped the charts.
