WPL UP Warriorz History
The BCCI expressed its plan to organize a five-team women’s franchise cricket tournament in March 2023. The tournament, officially named the Women’s Premier League in January 2023, saw franchises being acquired by investors through a closed bidding process. Capri Global secured the rights to a franchise based in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
In February 2023, Jon Lewis was appointed as the head coach. The inaugural player auction for the WPL took place on 13 February 2023, with UP Warriorz successfully signing 16 players for their squad. Despite finishing third in the group stage of the first WPL edition and qualifying for the eliminator, they faced a setback, losing to the Mumbai Indians by 72 runs.
