New Zealand have announced their squad for the T20 World Cup 2024, with Kane Williamson leading the team as captain. This marks New Zealand as the first team to unveil their squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in June.
The Kiwis have chosen a squad of 15 players for the ninth edition of the 20-over tournament. Alongside Williamson, the squad includes experienced players like Tim Southee and Trent Boult, forming a well-rounded team.
Williamson, who has previously led the team in T20 World Cups, will be making his sixth appearance in the tournament. Southee will be participating for the seventh time, while Boult will be making his fifth appearance. The team aims to secure their first title in this format of the game.
New Zealand’s squad selection didn’t feature any major surprises. However, key players like Kyle Jamieson and Adam Milne are ruled out due to injury. Despite recent good performances, players like Will O’Rourke, Tom Latham, Tim Seifert, and Will Young missed out on selection.
Notably, selectors opted for young talent Rachin Ravindra and fast bowler Matt Henry, both making their debut appearances in a T20 World Cup. Additionally, young pacer Ben Sears has been selected as a traveling reserve.
Coach Gary Stead expressed confidence in the squad’s balance and their ability to adapt to different conditions. He praised the efforts of both Henry and Ravindra, highlighting their dedication and performance in recent matches.
New Zealand’s campaign in the T20 World Cup begins with a match against Afghanistan on June 7 in Guyana, followed by games against co-hosts West Indies, Uganda, and Papua New Guinea.
