Royal Challengers Bangalore, who are very well-liked yet have no trophies to show for it, have finished in second place three times. They were the second-most expensive franchise in 2008 when they purchased for Rs 464 crore (about US$111.6 million). In 2015, Diageo India acquired ownership of the team from United Breweries Limited Chairman Vijay Mallya.

In 2008, when they heavily invested in seasoned players in the belief that they would also adapt swiftly to T20, the side was dubbed a Test XI, but RCB could only string together four victories. However, throughout the course of the following three seasons, they improved with two runner-up results.

Yuvraj Singh (2014), Dinesh Karthik (2015), and Chris Morris (2020) are three players that the club has spent a lot of money on over the years at the auction, but they haven’t always been supported for a second season if they didn’t do well the first time. Before his resignation after the 2021 season, the team maintained confidence in Virat Kohli as captain despite their shifting fortunes. 2008 – Seventh
The team lacked depth, and Dravid, the captain, appeared to be under constant strain. Although they had a good board in terms of tactics, they lacked the personnel to take on large targets or make goals. They have just four victories in their final seven games, a dismal record.

2009 – Runners-up
The perception that RCB is slow to start hasn’t changed much under new captain Kevin Pietersen. When Kumble took over as captain, RCB had dropped four of its previous six games, but he helped the club mount an incredible comeback and reach the championship game. After scoring the first century by an Indian in the IPL, Manish Pandey became a star.

2010 – Third
RCB advanced to the semifinals but fell to Mumbai Indians after a difficult chase. However, they later destroyed Deccan Chargers, the team they lost to in 2009 final, in a playoff for third place. This season, Robin Uthappa broke through with a run of reliable scores, but it turned out to be his final year with the team.

2011 – Runners-up
As captain, Daniel Vettori presided over a disappointing start for RCB as the batting failed to gel. Gayle then replaced Dirk Nannes in the lineup, scoring a brutal century against the team that had let him go, Kolkata Knight Riders. He led RCB to the final when they were defeated by Chennai Super Kings. He was the top run-maker that year.

2012 – Fifth
An unpredictable season came down to RCB requiring a victory over the Deccan Chargers in their final league game to qualify for the playoffs, but they disintegrated in a low-scoring chase and were destroyed by former RCB player Dale Steyn, who went 3 for 8. This season, Gayle overcame the 700-run threshold and continued to be the team’s top performer.

2013 – Fifth
Gayle had another year with 700+ runs, including the highest individual score in T20 cricket (175 not out) against the Pune Warriors. The leadership changed throughout the season when Kohli succeeded Vettori, however, Royal Challengers were unable to win the championship.

2014 – Seventh
Vettori replaced Ray Jennings as head coach after his departure. Yuvraj Singh was the target of RCB’s extravagant bid in the auction, but he fell short. Gayle had a poorer season than Kohli, as RCB struggled with only five victories. Nonetheless, Mitchell Starc’s presence had a silver lining in that Yuzvendra Chahal became a breakout star.

2015 – Third
This season, Dinesh Karthik was the most popular player, yet he only scored 141 runs in 11 innings before being swiftly released. With strong performances from Chahal, Starc, Harshal Patel, and S Aravind, the bowling was impressive. In the qualification match against CSK, Gayle, Kohli, and de Villiers continued to dominate the batting order but were unable to secure a victory on a square turner.

2016 – Runners-up
In a season in which he fell just short of 1000 runs, Kohli single-handedly changed the team’s fortunes. They advanced to the final against SRH in a huge chase after losing five of their first seven games. Gayle and Kohli set up a strong foundation, but the middle order collapsed under heavy strain.

2017 – Eighth
This miserable year was characterized by poor batting performances. Due to injury issues, de Villiers and Gayle combined for just 416 runs at an average of sub-25. Kohli and Gayle also experienced injury issues. The middle order gave in because of simply too much strain. The final score was three victories in 14 games, with the lowest point coming in a 49-all-out loss to Kolkata Knight Riders.

2018 – Sixth
Due to the absence of Gayle, Kohli and de Villiers were tasked with scoring 530 and 480 runs, respectively. Mandeep Singh finished second among the middle-order hitters, with 252 runs. The inability of RCBs to identify their optimal starting XI quickly harmed them. In their final match, against Rajasthan Royals, they had a slim opportunity to qualify, but they lost.

2019 – Eighth
With minimal assistance from the other batters, Kohli once again carried the bulk of the batting load. Death bowling continued to be an issue, the spinners had trouble, and it left RCB with an excessive amount of work to do in the second part of the match. In response to Kohli’s outspoken expression of his displeasure and powerlessness, the coaching staff was completely restructured in front of the 2020 season.

2020 – Fourth
A top-two finish was expected after seven victories in ten games, but after losing the following four, they were only able to qualify for the playoffs based on net run rate. They faced their nemesis team, Sunrisers Hyderabad, in the elimination round and lost. They suffered five straight losses to finish the tournament.

2021 – Third
In the eliminator, RCB faced a resurgent KKR that had won six of seven games to advance after coming within one hit of earning a top-two finish but faltered against Sunrisers Hyderabad to finish third. After a close game, RCB lost, and Kohli stepped down as captain of the team without having won a championship.

2022 – Fourth
They lost momentum after five victories in seven games and by the end were back in the typical situation of needing to win every game while praying for favorable circumstances. They were the fourth qualifying team to make it into the playoffs and defeated Lucknow Super Giants to advance past the Eliminator before being eliminated by Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 2.
