The Delhi Capitals (formerly Daredevils) struggled in the playoffs in 2012 and 2019, as well as the semi-finals in their first two seasons. For the first time in 2020, they advanced to the title round where they were defeated by the Mumbai Indians. They almost reached the same point in 2021, finishing first in the league, but they were eliminated after losing both of their playoff games.

Delhi Capitals History

In the past decade, the Delhi Capitals have rapidly risen to prominence as one of the most followed and admired franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Representing the capital of India, they have carved out a dynamic identity, bringing an exhilarating style of cricket that captures the spirit of Delhi and its neighboring regions on a national platform.

As the only IPL team bearing Delhi’s name, the franchise holds a special place in the hearts of its home fans, who passionately support them at every match in their iconic home ground, the Arun Jaitley Stadium. This regional pride fuels an extensive and loyal fan base that rallies behind the team, making every home game a spirited spectacle.

While the Delhi Capitals initially grappled with inconsistency during their early years, they have now established themselves as perennial contenders in the IPL playoffs. Their transformation from mid-table uncertainty to serious championship challengers has made them an intriguing team to follow for fans and neutrals alike.

With a squad that masterfully balances youthful exuberance and veteran experience, the Delhi Capitals showcase an aggressive and attacking style of cricket under the leadership of their young captain, Rishabh Pant. This brand of cricket resonates deeply with the younger generation of fans, aligning perfectly with the fast-paced, energetic nature of T20 cricket.

The team’s prominence extends beyond the field, with a robust digital presence that includes 1.1 million Twitter followers and creative social media campaigns aimed at expanding their fan base. Through this active online engagement, the Delhi Capitals continue to build a strong connection with cricket enthusiasts across the globe.

As the sole representative of India’s seat of power in the IPL, the Delhi Capitals carry the responsibility of keeping the capital’s cricket fans fully invested in the tournament. By embracing a thrilling brand of cricket, they have successfully woven themselves into Delhi’s rich sporting culture, ensuring that the franchise remains a beloved symbol of pride and excitement for their home city.

The Delhi Capitals, as an IPL franchise, possess a captivating backstory, deeply intertwined with the capital city’s rich cricketing heritage. Established in 2008 under the name Delhi Daredevils, the team initially struggled to find consistent success before their remarkable transformation in the past decade.

In their inaugural season, Delhi boasted a star-studded lineup featuring the likes of Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, and AB de Villiers. Despite this wealth of talent, the team fell short of reaching the playoffs, a trend that persisted for several seasons even with marquee players like Kevin Pietersen in the mix.

The turning point came in 2018 when, under the leadership of young captain Shreyas Iyer, the franchise rebranded itself as the Delhi Capitals, marking the dawn of a new era. This shift in identity was accompanied by a redesigned logo—replacing the previous tiger emblem with lions, symbolizing Delhi’s storied historical significance.

Their signature blue jerseys also saw a transformation, with red and white trims added to reflect the Indian tricolour, imbuing a sense of national pride into the team’s image. That same year, Delhi reached the playoffs, signifying their ascent from mediocrity to genuine title contenders.

Since then, with Rishabh Pant at the helm, Delhi Capitals have successfully blended youthful Indian talent with seasoned overseas stars, embracing an aggressive batting style and a fierce winning mentality. Their new-look jersey and logo, introduced in 2018, were also complemented by the launch of the team anthem #RoarMacha, encapsulating the passion and intensity they bring to the pitch.

In many ways, the journey of the Delhi Capitals mirrors the evolution of the city itself—rising from a period of mid-table obscurity to now standing tall among the elite of Indian cricket. The team’s story is one of perseverance, reinvention, and an unwavering belief in their potential to challenge for IPL glory.

Delhi Capitals Season-by-Season Runners-up

2008 – Fourth
With two straight victories, Delhi got off to a strong start. They won seven of their final 14 games, good for fourth place in the standings. However, Rajasthan Royals, who Delhi had previously defeated, were on a roll and defeated Delhi in the semifinals en route to winning the competition.

2009 – Third
At the competition’s group stage, which was held in South Africa, Delhi was the top team. They topped the standings entering the knockout rounds after winning ten of their first 14 games. However, they were defeated by the eventual champions Deccan Chargers in the semifinal.

2010 – Fifth
Delhi may have anticipated continuing the success of their previous two seasons, but after winning their first two games, they only added five more victories to end equal for third place with three other teams in terms of points, behind the Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians. They were defeated by Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore because of their negative net run rate.

2011 – Tenth
when everything first started to go bad. The IPL expanded to ten teams with the addition of Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala. The two new teams and Delhi made up the bottom three, with Delhi finishing last.

2012 – Third
Sehwag, Pietersen, Jayawardene, Morkel, and Warner were the big-ticket stars who delivered, and Delhi worked like a well-oiled machine to win the league stage. Yet for them, it would be so close yet so distant again because losses to KKR and CSK eliminated them.

2013 – Ninth
With three victories and 13 losses, Delhi went through possibly its greatest slump. After two victories, they went on a run of six straight losses to complete their season. Their first victory came against the Mumbai Indians in their seventh game.

2014 – Eighth
Another season, another awful showing. They had three wins and thirteen losses the year before, but this time, with the tournament down to eight teams, they had two wins and twelve losses, with both of their victories coming in the UAE’s first five games. Delhi lost nine games in a row to finish the tournament.

2015 – Seventh
Nothing really worked in Delhi at this period. Although they performed slightly better than in 2014, their five victories and eight defeats only allowed them to finish above Kings XI Punjab, another team with a reputation for consistently placing in the bottom half of the standings.

2016 – Sixth
Delhi’s fortunes had a slight improvement: after spending time at the bottom of the standings, they ascended one spot up the ladder with seven victories and seven losses. Amit Mishra, a legspinner, and Chris Morris, another South African import, combined for 26 wickets. Quinton de Kock led the way with 445 runs.

2017 – Seventh
With another sixth-place result, but this time with six victories and eight losses, Delhi reached a plateau. Nonetheless, there was cause to believe that the foundation of a potent team was coming together with Sanju Samson, Rishabh Pant, and Shreyas Iyer all scoring over 300 runs for the season.

2018 – Eighth
Despite the fact that Pant scored 684 runs in 14 innings at a strike rate of 173.60, Iyer contributed 411 runs, while Trent Boult (18 wickets) and Vijay Shankar all made significant contributions, Delhi nevertheless lost nine games and only won five. That resulted in them placing last for the fourth time.

2019 – Third
When Dhawan went back to his old team, Pant, Iyer, Shaw, and he together scored nearly 1500 runs. With 25 wickets, Kagiso Rabada topped the bowling attack. This time, Delhi finished third on the table after winning nine games. They defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in the eliminator to earn their first-ever knockout victory but were then eliminated by CSK.

2020 – Runners-up
Axar Patel and Marcus Stoinis had outstanding all-around performances, while Dhawan and Iyer excelled with the bat, collecting 618 and 519 runs, respectively. Rabada and Anrich Nortje also picked up 52 wickets between them. After defeating SRH and advancing to the final, the capitals won eight of their remaining 14 league games before losing the championship match.

2021 – Third
Avesh, a fast bowler, was the year’s biggest success, taking 24 wickets at a 7.37 economy. Dhawan had another outstanding season, finishing with 587 runs despite a slight decline at the end. The other two high-scoring players were Shaw and Pant, who scored 479 and 419 runs, respectively. However, Delhi’s batting was lacking, and they struggled in the playoffs.

2022 – Fifth
Who knows what could have happened if Pant had reviewed Tim David of the Mumbai Indians’ caught-behind in their last league game when David was on zero? After winning the game, David eliminated the Capitals. Warner (back with the team), Shaw, and Mitchell Marsh put in some solid effort up front during the season, while a new-look bowling attack, of which Kuldeep Yadav grabbed 21 wickets from 14 games, performed well.
